為了處理急需響應的輸入信號，PLC有種種措施。不同的PLC措施也不*相同，提高響應速度的效果也不同。一般的作法是采用輸入中斷，然后再輸出即時刷新，即中斷程序運行后，有關的輸出點立即刷新，而不等到整個程序運行結束后再刷新。
這個效果可從兩個方面來衡量：一是能否對幾個輸入信號作快速響應；二是快速響應的速度有多快。多數PLC都可對一個或多個輸入點作快速響應，快速響應時間僅幾個毫秒。性能高的、大型的PLC響應點數更多。
工作速度關系到PLC對輸入信號的響應速度，是PLC對系統控制是否及時的前提。控制不及時，就不可能準確與可靠，特別是對一些需作快速響應的系統。這就是把工作速度作為PLC*指標的原因。
