Consists of a tight bundle of 7 optical fibers in a stainless steel ferrule - 6 illumination fibers around 1 read fiber.
A light source is coupled into the 6 ilumination fibers and carried to the probe end. The surface will selectively reflect light back into a 7th fiber. This fiber transfers the data to the output SMA905 connector, which is coupled to a spectrometer.
Higher diameter of the fibers transmits more energy from the light source and increases the signal to noise ratio.
